Woodland Works – The Willow Project (Open Event)

January 20, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Location: West of Haydon Bridge, Northumberland
Number of Places: 12

Two years ago we started to reinstate this old biomass willow plot, established for growing trials which were later abandoned. This plot could become a useful resource for making willow hurdles, sculptures etc, and so we spend a couple of days each winter harvesting and sorting willow regrowth and continue to get old willow stools back into production.

People are welcome to cut willow for their own needs, but please note this is not basket making willow.
Some hand tools will be available, but feel free to bring loppers, secateurs, and handsaws (for green wood). To speed up the process, there will be a couple of chainsaw operators, but this has been pre-arranged so please don’t bring a chainsaw.

Please bring working clothes and footwear, gloves, and a flask + packed lunch. We will be having a bonfire to clear old and rotten willow wood.
We aim to finish by 3pm, but come for as long as you like.
If you would like to attend this event, please contact Mark Shipperlee email mark@livingwoodsnortheast.org.uk or text/call on 07854 694 429
Maximum of twelve places available.
There is a lay-by on the north side of the A69 (see map). Please pull into the lay-by, but make sure to park on the grass near the hedge (leaving the lay-by clear for other road users).
The willow plot is at the west end of the field behind the hedge. If you’re arriving late, just climb over the wooden gate in the hedge.
